About school assistant roles
School assistants support school operations, learning and student wellbeing in primary schools, high schools, colleges and specialist schools. They work alongside teachers and school leaders in a range of support roles.
There are 24 different roles available across 5 key streams[MF2] .
- Administration and operations: Supporting front office, finance and school administration functions.
- Identified positions: Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families and communities.
- Learning support: Working alongside teachers to support students with additional learning needs.
- Student services and welfare: Supporting student wellbeing, inclusion and engagement.
- Technical services: Providing ICT, library, laboratory or other specialist technical support.
Employment types and work arrangements
School assistants can be employed in permanent, temporary or casual roles, depending on school needs.
Most roles work during school hours and school terms, which may suit people seeking flexible or part‑time employment.
Eligibility and requirements
To be employed as a school assistant in an ACT public school, you must have:
- a valid ACT Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration (or eligibility to apply)
- Australian citizenship, permanent residency or a valid working visa.
Many school assistant roles do not require formal qualifications. Relevant skills, experience and a willingness to learn are highly valued.
