  • Thank you for your interest in applying for a Learning Support Assistant role with the ACT Education Directorate in our Specialist schools.

    Learning Support Assistants in specialist schools work alongside teachers and school leaders to support student learning, engagement and wellbeing throughout the school day.

     About our Specialist Schools:

    ACT public schools include 4 specialist schools that provide education settings for students who have been diagnosed with moderate, severe or profound intellectual disability:

     

    Our specialist schools are:

    • Black Mountain School supports students in years 7 to 12 from Canberra’s northside.
    • Cranleigh supports students in kindergarten to year 6 living north of Lake Burley Griffin.
    • Malkara School supports students in preschool to year 6 on Canberra’s southside.
    • The Woden School provides a supported high school program for students in years 7 to 12 living on the southside of Canberra.

    Completing this form:  You will be asked to complete several pre-screening questions so your eligibility can be assessed. 

     

    For casual school assistant applications you will need to provide:

    • Your resume/CV.
    • Certified copy of your ACT Working with Vulnerable People card.
    • Copies of any relevant qualifications or certificates and final academic transcripts.
    • A written application of no more than three pages addressing the selection questions.
    • At least one referee report, however two is preferable, from your current or most recent supervisor.

     Multiple files can be uploaded but must not exceed 10MB per file. Documents uploaded must be in PDF (.pdf) or Microsoft Word formats (.docx, .doc or .rtf).

  • Please note Preschool Assistants will be required to provide copies of your Early Childhood Qualification and Final Academic Transcripts.

    Role

    Roles within the Learning Support stream provide support to teachers and students who have intellectual and/or physical disabilities in classroom activities and may include:

    • working with individual students or small groups
    • providing physical support, emotional support and personal hygiene and health care for students
    • assisting with the implementation of approved specialist programs
    • providing specialist hearing, vision or bilingual support to students.

    • Describe the strategies you would implement to support students in their learning and development to achieve positive educational outcomes, noting students may have intellectual and/or physical disabilities.
    • How would you build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and communities?
    • How would you communicate effectively with students or colleagues to ensure you are understood?
    • Can you provide an example of when you have had to prioritise multiple tasks to meet deadlines?
    • Can you provide an example of when you have had to work independently and as part of a team to complete a task?

  • All positions within the Education Directorate are required to undertake training through HRIMS Learning. Casual employees are encouraged to discuss with schools the allocation of time during bookings to complete required training.

    HRIMS Learning modules can be accessed through ConnectED when log onto the Education network.
